{"id":1857,"date":"2017-11-06T17:11:53","date_gmt":"2017-11-06T17:11:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kylewis.co.uk\/?page_id=1857"},"modified":"2019-01-08T12:34:34","modified_gmt":"2019-01-08T12:34:34","slug":"common-ground-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.kylewis.co.uk\/?page_id=1857","title":{"rendered":"Common Ground"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Common Ground is the culmination&nbsp;of a period of work that was&nbsp;undertaken by three artists working on&nbsp;their own allotment plots but on a&nbsp;shared allotment site.&nbsp;The work culminated in a group show&nbsp;with Linda Litchfield a textile artist,&nbsp;Una Joy painter printmaker and Ky&nbsp;Lewis photographer printmaker at The&nbsp;Lovely Gallery in South London&nbsp;September to October 2017.&nbsp;This small artists book includes some&nbsp;of those works and thoughts by Ky&nbsp;Lewis as part of her works with&nbsp;pinhole and camera-less photographic&nbsp;processes and the making of the&nbsp;images in the exhibition.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-1858 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kylewis.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/KyLewis_GoldenAllium-_290x240mms-767x960.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"767\" height=\"960\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kylewis.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/KyLewis_GoldenAllium-_290x240mms-767x960.jpg 767w, https:\/\/www.kylewis.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/KyLewis_GoldenAllium-_290x240mms-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/www.kylewis.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/KyLewis_GoldenAllium-_290x240mms-768x961.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.kylewis.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/KyLewis_GoldenAllium-_290x240mms.jpg 799w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 100vw, 767px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After pursuing many avenues in a&nbsp;search for the correct image making&nbsp;processes I decided to use primarily&nbsp;camera-less work, this would&nbsp;include a number of processes&nbsp;which could actually be performed&nbsp;on site as well as in the darkroom. I&nbsp;wanted to work with available&nbsp;materials and use the plants, water&nbsp;and if possible the juices of certain&nbsp;plants on site to create the images&nbsp;that would eventually come to be a&nbsp;body of work that could be&nbsp;exhibited&nbsp;Over the months I tried various&nbsp;methods of capturing elements from&nbsp;the allotment and I had placed&nbsp;pinhole cameras over the site in&nbsp;certain position in order to capture&nbsp;the passage of the sun and possible&nbsp;growth of some plants encroaching&nbsp;on the view created. The homemade&nbsp;pinhole cameras were left out for a&nbsp;period of approximately 12 weeks<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1859\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kylewis.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/KyLewis_HeracleumSpondylium_290x240mmS-769x960.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"769\" height=\"960\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kylewis.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/KyLewis_HeracleumSpondylium_290x240mmS-769x960.jpg 769w, https:\/\/www.kylewis.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/KyLewis_HeracleumSpondylium_290x240mmS-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/www.kylewis.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/KyLewis_HeracleumSpondylium_290x240mmS-768x959.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.kylewis.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/KyLewis_HeracleumSpondylium_290x240mmS.jpg 801w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 769px) 100vw, 769px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The camera-less images were a&nbsp;direct response to plants on both&nbsp;my own plot and others on the&nbsp;site.&nbsp;It was easy to use plants from&nbsp;my own plot but I felt uneasy&nbsp;about taking plants from other&nbsp;peoples without permission and&nbsp;so to a certain extent though a&nbsp;large site the plants were limited&nbsp;by not wanting to remove&nbsp;growing specimens.&nbsp;Some were in such cases captured&nbsp;in-situ but this was not always&nbsp;possible.<\/p>\n<p>The Cyanotype process meant I&nbsp;could work onsite and using&nbsp;the&nbsp;water from the dip tanks wash out&nbsp;the image there and then, not&nbsp;always successful as the water&nbsp;was often very much like stagnant&nbsp;pond water, this would&nbsp;occasionally give a cast to some&nbsp;images.&nbsp;I also made photograms which&nbsp;needed to be produced in a&nbsp;darkroom setting and the plants&nbsp;used were gathered and taken&nbsp;home.&nbsp;Plants taken away from the site&nbsp;were obviously cut and their&nbsp;subsequent withering also became&nbsp;part of the process.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1861 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kylewis.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/KyLewis_LunarLunaria_290x240mms-771x960.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"771\" height=\"960\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kylewis.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/KyLewis_LunarLunaria_290x240mms-771x960.jpg 771w, https:\/\/www.kylewis.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/KyLewis_LunarLunaria_290x240mms-241x300.jpg 241w, https:\/\/www.kylewis.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/KyLewis_LunarLunaria_290x240mms-768x956.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.kylewis.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/KyLewis_LunarLunaria_290x240mms.jpg 803w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 771px) 100vw, 771px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>These became more controlled in&nbsp;production and some were subject&nbsp;to various chemical processes in&nbsp;order to achieve the results. This&nbsp;involved using chemicals that I&nbsp;would not want at the site. The&nbsp;inclusion of what some may&nbsp;consider &#8216;weeds&#8217; was a conscious&nbsp;decision as an ongoing battle with&nbsp;plants that choose to find their&nbsp;own place to grow.&nbsp;Allotments, even within the&nbsp;confines of particular plots tend to&nbsp;share their &#8216;weeds&#8217; and the use, in&nbsp;some instances of multiple pieces&nbsp;of paper to create an image&nbsp;mirrored the crossover that occurs&nbsp;from plot to plot,&nbsp;the natural spread&nbsp;and the lack of total control reflects&nbsp;also the processes used and&nbsp;serendipity involved in the production&nbsp;of these pieces.
